Tokidoki at Sephora

I didn't post about this yet but yesterday at South Coast Plaza, Sephora had Simone Legno, the creator of the Tokidoki brand, signing to celebrate the release of his newest cosmetics. The highlight of my day was seeing a life-size Sandy! She's awesome :) I'm glad they made huge mascots.

Tokidoki for Sephora

I ended up buying the Kabuki Brush, Set of 3 Nail Files - Series Due, and Prisma Lip Gloss in Rocketeer. I haven't used the brush yet and I'm kind of reluctant to do so since it's sooooo adorable. I didn't really get what people were saying about the lip gloss having a wand that wasn't a brush. Well if you're interested, it's a flexible piece of plastic pretty much. It's pretty easy to put on the gloss and I rather like it.

I asked for Simone to sign my bag while he signed a wooden plaque for us as well. I asked for the bunny with a sword through it (I meant the one from his skate deck design) but he drew a different type of bunny with a sword through it seen here. It's still cute but different lol

San Diego Comic Con 2010 Exclusives!

It's that time of year again! For what, you may ask? COMIC-CON OF COURSE! Pretty soon there will be more and more companies releasing previews for their San Diego Comic-Con exclusives. In some cases, they already have! So what is in store for SDCC 2010 in exclusive aspects? I will be following the various news sites and providing those answers :) So stay tuned!

There are always those MUST HAVE items from the same old companies at SDCC. In particular, Hasbro, Mattel, Gentle Giant, AFX and Sideshow Collectibles have the longest wait times and hardest to obtain exclusives. One great thing about SDCC in the past few years is that companies have begun to release pre-orders for their exclusives. In many cases, they offer the same exclusives to their fans that are not able to attend.

I will be compiling an excel sheet that you will find here

Just kidding... no excel sheet went up :P

June Brides?

I know I haven't updated about my job search so I'll do that later. But first, I want to talk about a topic that has been on my mind for a while.

Well it's been five years since I've graduated high school and I see more and more of my old friends and aquaintances from high school getting married. I haven't taken a walk down the aisle yet but it's not for a lack of relationship. Life kind of got in the way so things have just gotten stagnant in that area. I've been in the same relationship for almost 7 years (it'll be 7 years June 4th) and we're happy even though we aren't married. That isn't to say that I don't want to get married and I actually do think of it quite a bit like any other woman. My significant other and I know we will get married it's just a matter of when. Mostly, it's a monetary issue and we thought it'd be good to wait until after college. Now that we're graduating, we have nothing else holding us back which is kind of funny. So now what's ahead? A wedding of course!

I decided that even though I'm not getting married on any set date that I would go ahead and plan it. To be honest, we want to keep our anniversary the same date so I will be getting married on June 4th. The fact of the matter is, the only dates that June 4th will be on the weekend is in 2011, 2016, and 2017. We could choose to sign the papers on June 4th and have our wedding ceremony + reception later on but I really don't want to do that. Technically there is nothing wrong with that but for my own personal preference, I don't want the dates on my wedding items being different. Then again I wouldn't mind having the wedding in the middle of the week on June 4, 2013. An upside to this possibility would that it would reduce the amount of guests that attended.

Possible Wedding Dates: June 4th in 2011, 2013, 2016, or 2017.

Like I mentioned before, I am not like other soon-to-be brides. I know that I am getting married someday and I have control over the date even though I have no ring yet. So I can begin preparing in advance. I'll be aiming for a year from now but reasonably three years from now. It'll be cute, my 10th anniversary becoming my wedding date :) I like it!

Stay tuned for more of my ideas as I begin planning this wedding. I plan on doing most of the stuff myself (DIY fun!) mostly because I want it to be really special and also I hope to plan on a reasonable budget.

My Journey with finding a job

I will be graduating in a little over a month now so I've already started my journey on the career path. So in this post I will be discussing some of the things I have done to prepare.
==================================================
First... RESUME!

I got my resume put together. I didn't have to make many changes to it just updated it. Every time I applied to a job I went over the qualifications and made sure they were relevant to the job position. A few sites that helped me get this together were:
There were more but I can't recall them all. I looked at a lot of samples. Googling resume sample and looking at the images was a great help also.
===============================================================
Second... COVER LETTER!

I created a moderate cover letter template with all the information about myself that I'd want employers to know. If I saw something I liked in another cover letter I'd copy it down in a document and rephrase it later or write a similar segment using my own experiences and qualifications. I'm learning what employers want to see and what to exclude. It's good to double check. It's good to overwrite and keep all possible thoughts in one document for later use. Although something is not applicable to one job, it may repeat in the next so it's great to be prepared.

You ALWAYS want a cover letter. Even if it does not require any, at least send a few words if there's a note section in the application. I've discovered that I have a lot more to say about myself and my qualifications once I started brain storming.
==================================================
Third... THE JOB SEARCH!

I first started by going on my university's job search site. Luckily, UC Irvine has an extensive job searching site that is practically updated with several jobs a day. But I do not believe that is enough... so I started using job search engines. Yahoo's monster affiliation site is excellent to search on. But I've noticed a lot of repetative, "Want a new job? We'll train you for a fee if you qualify" or "internet job from home" and they just end up wanting you to join something like a pyramid scheme. So you have to be careful of what you're thinking about applying to. I know I received an email regarding an application I sent that was for a recruitment/staffing company where you paid in order to find a job. I forget what they're called exactly but I do not believe in paying for a placement service when you should be actively pursuing job positions yourself.

A lot of entry-level positions are requiring at least 1 year experience to qualify. Even sales positions in the mall and at other retailers are now requiring work experience due to the current economy. But even if you never had a job, you should still try to apply in my opinion. The worst they can do is not review your resume and toss it away. But, I believe with each consecutive application, you become more aware of your qualifications and refine your resume and cover letters. Think about why they may not have considered you aside from lack of work experience. There are a lot of things you can mention, such as school curriculum and/or interests, to make yourself more appealing. Especially in the cover letter.

While a lot of sites have been mentioning considering an internship which is good; however, a lot of internships today require that you're a full-time student. Unfortunately, I didn't jump on the internship bandwagon while still in school. I am technically still a full-time student, but I'll be graduating in mid-June and I won't be a student for the time period they plan on hiring. So that rules out a lot of internships. They're still good to look for... just be aware you probably won't find an internship unless you're actually still in school or you will be in school for the coming term(s).

Other sources for jobs include craigslist, facebook, and LinkedIn. Do not overlook these sites! Craigslist has a lot of scammers, so I usually only respond to entries that mention the company and are actual companies (if you're not sure they exist then GOOGLE). If there's an option of emailing it through another email other than the craigslist one, I choose that so I know who I am emailing.

Facebook has a marketplace acts as an online classified ad. When people post job positions, you can actually see who posted it and visit their company/personal profiles most of the time. It's also great if you're a student like myself, looking for an entry-level position.

Lastly, to be honest I hadn't heard about LinkedIn until I started looking for a job. Some of the positions I applied for required familiarity with social media sites such as Twitter and Facebook. LinkedIn was one of them so I decided to check it out. It has a job search feature and is excellent if you want to know who is working at a company and in what position.
==================================================
What do you do now that you've received a call-back, email-back, etc.?

The phone call to set up an interview. This is a BIG step. It is important to create rapport even in this short phone call. A number of sites I visited mentioned how a lot of people overlook this step. In my case, although I read a lot of articles on how to handle phone calls... I think I failed in distinguishing myself as a job candidate. Remember to SMILE! I noticed that my own voice changes and I lose confidence if I don't actively remember. You may be great at speaking on the phone but if you're like me then REMEMBER TO SMILE! If you're not confident in what to say... prepare it before hand on a document.

The Interview!
I've been googling techniques and it's fair to say I still don't feel prepared.

Results!
Even if you fail then you should have come away from it with the experience and knowledge of what to do better next time!

*I'm not finished with this post... I'll be editing it more later*

Blind as a bat

Okay I liked that wasn't all... when I haven't been writing in a while and then decide to write I tend to spew out all my thoughts that kind of just piled up all day!

So anywhoo... my eye sight has gotten tons worse...
  • In 2006, I got my first pair of eyeglasses. My prescription was -1.0 for each eye.
  • I got another pair of glasses that were -1.50 in each eye
  • In 2008-2009 (not sure when), I got my third pair of glasses with -2.0 in each eye
  • Last week... my eyes are at -3.50 hahahaha... god my eyes suck now
needless to say I've caught up with my sister and her eye sight... but she's 26 and she's had glasses since she was 12 or 13 years old :P

But enough about glasses... I just realized I still need to find a place to live next year. BUUUUUT I should really do that AFTER I find a stable job. SOOOO this is all I feel like mentioning at the moment. A blog post about my job journey will be posted sometime soon though.

SHINIES!!!!

Decided to do a more thoughtful blog. So here I am with my shiny new blog.

Now I must pose the question... WHY? Why a new blog? Well... I kind of want to detach my professional life from the screen name you can google and see several years of history. Like literally... you google that screen name and *POOF* you have data on me dating back to the early 2000s. I don't think quite as far as 2000 but pretty much from the time I started high school. While it was nice having a unique screen name that required no numbers and no one else ever used. It's kind of scary that you can track my internet history a little bit. It could also bite me in the butt later. hehe.

I have quite a bit I want to write so lets get on with my shiny new blog :D

Updates with me... I am taking 3 different courses for my last quarter as an undergraduate at UC Irvine: Social Deviance, Sports Psychology, and Social Network and Support. The funny thing is... all three classes talk about the same theories, stress, coping, and society. It's kind of nice that they all reiterate similar themes and I guess that's what's so great about Sociology and Psychology.

Deviance helps put personal actions in perspective. Sure it may be "deviant" according to society but that's just because they defined it that way. It does not necessarily mean that I must think my own actions are deviant. It also makes you feel all warm and fuzzy about yourself.

Sports Psychology is really helpful when address goal setting and coping. Learning how to pace yourself is invaluable in all areas of life. I really appreciate this class for putting things like that and actually requiring me to think about my own personal goal. Just as a note... my goal in my first paper was to find a job and I've already done several of my subgoals! YAY to progress :D

Social Networking and Support shows just how important it is to have friends and family. Social networks really tone down the stress. It also helps to know of more ways to cope with stress. That knowledge alone has been extremely helpful.

So... what have I discovered?!
  • Self-acceptance! Accepting who I am and my situation
  • More coping methods for stress! Less stress response = less anxiety/panic attacks
  • Goal Setting! I made a goal and I'm going to keep it
For self note... my goals are as follows
  • Finding a job... preferably in marketing (not so much sales), public relations, administration, human resources, or management
  • Studying for the GRE and GMAT
  • Visiting schools, gathering information, and applying to a MBA or MS program in a business related field
I also have a paper I am working on for class... I have to find articles relating to gender differences in social networks formed through online gaming and its effects on health... found 1 awesome one and only 2 more to go! w00t

That is all for today/tonight/this morning
